2010 High Sierra Fall Century – On a Single Speed

Well, I was officially the only Single Speed’er to complete the High Sierra Fall Century.  Pretty fun seeing all the roadies fly by me on the flats, and then passing them up on the climbs.  I definitely got a lot of respect for chugging out 100 miles with one gear.  For this ride, I wound up using 32:17 gearing, Schwalbe Furious Fred tires, and a Niner Carbon Fork to get my bike into the 17-18 lbs. range.  Amazing views of Mono Lake and lots of fun descending to offset the heart-bursting climbs.  Because this is offered as a “ride” not a “race”, there’s no pressure, a great atmosphere and camaraderie on the course, and you can start anytime within a 2 hour window.  The aid stations are all well stocked.

Anyhoo, tons of fun and a great event.  Hope to do it again next year… and it’s at HOME… which makes it even better – and proceeds support Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra.  Awesome!
